Worlds: grow a map into an open world

A world is a grid of sections, and every section is a full map. You start from one map and add land on any side. The new land blends into its neighbours, keeps the world's look, and roads carry on across the borders. Then you build each section in Studio and they join up into one big open world.

Start a world#

  1. Make a map on the create page, or open one of your maps.
  2. When the map is finished, press Grow into a world (next to "Want more land? Keep building on every side.").
  3. Press Start the world. The same prompt and seed are built again as the world's first section, bigger and with open edges.
  4. The world page opens. It shows a top view of every section, placed where it sits in the world. North is up.

Every section is 1,536 studs across, and each one uses 1 map from today's allowance. You can find all your worlds on your account page under Your worlds.

Add land on any side#

  1. On the world page, press the + next to a finished section (for example Add east).
  2. Describe the new land, for example snowy mountains with a cabin village. The box starts with your last prompt.
  3. If a road reaches that side, pick where it goes (see below).
  4. Press Add this section. A section takes about a minute, and the page updates by itself.
  • It joins up. Near each border, the new land's hills, coasts and water blend into the section next to it, so there is no seam.
  • It keeps the world's look. New sections use the world's theme and time of day, unless your prompt names another theme (the time of day stays the same).
  • One at a time. Wait for the section in progress to finish before you add the next one.
  • If the first section fails, press Try again, maybe with other words.

Sections are named by their spot in the grid. The first one is s0_0. The first number grows to the east, the second to the south, and m means minus: s1_0 is east of the start, s0_1 is south, sm1_0 is west and s0_m1 is north.

The "Road goes" picker#

When a road leaves the section beside the new land, the Road goes picker lets you choose what it does next. Left and right are seen from a car driving into the new section.

ChoiceWhat the road does
Straight (the default)Goes on and leaves by the far side.
Turn left / Turn rightTurns and leaves by that side.
End hereEnds at a turnaround or a destination.
ForkSplits and leaves by two sides.

The line under the picker tells you which side the road will leave by. A choice that can't work stays grey and says why when you press it. For example, the road can't leave toward a section that is already there and has no road on that border.

Build the world in Studio#

You need the BloxMaps Cloud plugin, signed in (see Export a map to Roblox Studio).

  1. Open your place, then Plugins > BloxMaps Cloud > Cloud Maps.
  2. In My maps, pick a section of the world. Sections are listed like maps, with the section in the name (like Pirate Cove · world s1_0).
  3. Press One-click build (or Export + one-click build if it's not exported yet).
  4. Do the same for every section. Each one lands in its own spot, and they join up.

Each section is one export, like a map. Models you already uploaded are never uploaded again, so later sections are quicker.

In the Explorer, a world looks like this:

Explorer
Workspace
BloxWorld the world (attributes: WorldName, SectionSize)
s0_0 one section: like a map's BloxMap folder (Markers, BloxMapGameplay...)
    s1_0
    ...
    Markers
Bounds one set of invisible walls around the whole world
  • Each section folder has the attributes Section, Grid, Origin, SectionSize, AreaMin and AreaMax (its square).
  • Sections keep the Area box of their Bounds, but not the walls, so players can walk from one section into the next. The world gets one set of walls around all of it.
  • The sea around the world is redone after each section you build.
  • Scripts that find markers by tag work for every section at once. See Scripting a map.
